Psychologist Salary Range - How Much Do They Earn?
As in any other field, salaries for Psychologists vary significantly based on what their specialty is and where they are employed. The latest statistical figures that are listed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics are from May of 2008.
As of that time the median salary for school, clinical and counseling psychologists was $64,140. From there it is further broken down as follows:
- Middle 50% between $48,700 and $82,800
- Bottom 10% less than $37,900
- Top 10% more than $106,840
Within that broad category of clinical, counseling and school psychologists, salaries are further broken down by specific types of employment as indicated in the following figures:
- Offices of other health practitioners - $68,400
- Elementary and secondary schools - $65,710
- State government - $63,710
- Outpatient care centers - $59,130
- Individual and family services - $57,440
Then there is another entity altogether and that is a group of psychologists who practice in the field of Industrial-Organizational Psychology. At first glance it appears that this group fares far better than psychologists who work in educational and group practices. There are experts who contend this is the case because industry has more capital to work with. The median annual salary for this group was $77,010. Statistics are further broken down as follows:
- Middle 50% between $54,100 and $115,720
- Bottom 10% less than $38,690
- Top 10% more than $149,120
As with any other field, salaries vary based on where you are employed and of course your level of expertise. Also, there appears to be a broad discrepancy in salaries between government and private occupations. It will be interesting to see the new statistics which may be coming out this year.
